For the fool speaks folly, his mind is busy with evil: He practices ungodliness and spreads error concerning the LORD; the hungry he leaves empty and from the thirsty he withholds water.
Here on earth you’re smart if you know the latest fashion, what clothes to wear and not to wear, if you know the latest song or movie that came out. You’re smart if you know the latest news and gossip so that you can fit in with your friends and the people in your social circle.
You’re wise in heaven if you refrain from the latest earthly news and gossip and instead know the latest news and words and wisdom from God, which is the same as it was in the beginning.
His wisdom is the same, His words and commandments are the same, and His truth is the same. If you choose to follow His will and do good things, keep the commandments, and walk in integrity, you are wise in God’s eyes.
If you choose to stand out from this world rather than fit in, then you are being wise, the godly way.
We have all seen how society mocks righteousness and goodness. If you’re a virgin and decide to wait until marriage, you can be sure that the devil will try to use other people to mock and ridicule you. If you choose to obey God and follow His commandments, you will as well.
And if you choose not to drink, smoke, do drugs, or party or choose to be a vegetarian or do anything that is really a good, compassionate, and righteous thing, you can be sure that the devil will use the people around you to discourage and demotivate you.
If you choose to make good and right choices, you can be sure that the devil will try to discourage this behavior, and if you are being wicked and sinful, you can be sure that he will try to encourage this.
Isn’t it ironic how everything in this world is turned upside down, everything good gets mocked, and everything bad gets praised? Isn’t it ironic how people will try to keep you from being good and doing the right thing? Why can’t they be bad and wicked and entangle themselves alone in their road to death and destruction, why do they have to bring other people with them?
Don’t be affected or discouraged by other people’s opinions. Choose to do what you know is right, and see that you will get rewarded for it. Be in the world but not of it, don’t fit in but stand out, be unique and be different and reap a good harvest from it.
If you choose to be different from this world in your behavior and thinking, you truly are wise, because the foolish things of this world don’t matter in heaven.
You have loved righteousness and hated lawlessness; therefore God, your god, has anointed you with the oil of gladness above your companions.
